Job Description – Senior Manager / Head – Safety, Health, Environment & Operations
Experience: 15+ years in Steel / Metals / Power / Heavy Manufacturing
Education: B.E./B.Tech (Mechanical / Electrical / Metallurgy / Chemical) with ADIS / NEBOSH / equivalent safety certifications
Role OverviewThe incumbent will lead Safety, Environment, Health, Operations, Administration, Project Management, and Coordination functions, ensuring legal compliance, operational excellence, employee well-being, and sustainable business performance. This role requires strong leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and expertise in safety and operational management in a large-scale industrial setup.
Key Responsibilities1. SafetyDevelop and implement HIRAC, JSA, PSM, SOPs, Emergency Preparedness Plans, and Training documents.
Drive safety initiatives: Near Miss Reporting, Unsafe Act/Condition identification, Toolbox Talks, PTW, LOTO, Mock Drills, Tabletop Exercises, Safety Themes, and 5S programs.
Conduct safety training, refresher programs, BBS initiatives, and awareness campaigns.
Lead internal & external audits ensuring 100% compliance with legal/statutory requirements.
Carry out incident investigations, RCA, corrective/preventive action plans, and legal reporting.
Promote safety culture through events, competitions, and engagement activities.
Implement engineering controls, system modifications, and poka-yoke solutions to enhance safety.
Review safety performance with stakeholders and manage safety budgets.
2. EnvironmentImplement engineering modifications/upgrades for compliance.
Monitor and control environmental parameters within permissible limits.
Ensure upkeep, inspection, and maintenance of environmental systems.
Conduct awareness & refresher programs on environment management.
Ensure adherence to environmental legal norms & reporting compliance.
3. HealthConduct regular health monitoring & wellness programs for engineers and associates.
4. OperationsLead shutdown planning & execution ensuring safety, efficiency, and minimal downtime.
5. AdministrationOversee documentation & reporting: MIS, audits, training, material management, business excellence.
Develop training modules (3-day, 8-day, 30-day, refresher, and multi-skilling programs).
Drive business excellence initiatives: Six Sigma, QC projects, FMEA, Lean CTR, 5S.
Provide analysis, planning, and troubleshooting support.
Build talent pools, leadership pipelines, and team capabilities.
Lead coaching, mentoring, and team-building programs including soft-skills and leadership training.
Manage employee engagement through festivals, sports, safety events, and cultural activities.
Ensure performance management, feedback, and succession planning.
Utilize SAP PM, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, and cloud-based systems.
Manage materials & contracts, cost adherence, and audits (ISO, TS, Safety, Quality, Customer).
Contribute to organization branding, ethics & value system reinforcement.
6. Project ManagementPrepare visionary project lists, prioritize initiatives, and identify key projects.
Execute internal projects: PRs, design, procurement, fabrication, erection, trials, and commissioning.
Support project team execution, ensuring proper coordination and monitoring.
7. CoordinationCollaborate with cross-functional teams: DCM, QA/QC, R&D, Purchase, Stores, Contracts, Central Maintenance, HODs, and Business Excellence teams.
Manage alignment with internal suppliers, internal customers, auditors, parent company & due diligence teams.
Ensure support for costing, ISO audits, taxation & finance compliance.
Build strong stakeholder relationships across departments and external agencies.
Key Competencies & SkillsExpertise in HSE systems, audits, statutory/legal compliance.
Strong knowledge of shutdowns, plant operations, project management.
Experience in Six Sigma, Lean, Business Excellence, and ISO frameworks.
Proven ability in team leadership, mentoring & succession planning.
Excellent analytical, communication & stakeholder management skills.
Proficiency in SAP PM and digital tools.
